4 years after his first film "Gone Baby Gone" that he had incidentally presented lee valley in preview at the American Film Festival of Deauville, and two years after "The Town," Ben Affleck returns last the camera lee valley with "Argo". After exploring the shallows or the obscure and secret lee valley depths of Boston, he takes us this time in Iran in 1979.
November 4, 1979, in full Iranian revolution, activists invaded the US embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. Amidst the chaos, six Americans manage to escape and take refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing that they will eventually be discovered and likely killed, a specialist in "exfiltration" of the CIA named Tony Mendez (Affleck himself) rides a risky plan, totally preposterous to get them out of the country. A plan so incredible, it was inspired by a true story, only Hollywood and cinema lee valley could invent: lee valley passing the six Americans to smuggle to the crew of a film, "Argo ".
Who especially liked the first two films of Ben Affleck filmmaker, I had high expectations of this third feature also critically acclaimed, and yet it is in my opinion the worst of the three, or at most cases agreed that presents the pitfalls he masterfully avoided in his previous films: Manichaeism and scriptwriting facilities.
This course begins lee valley with a clever mix of archive footage and fiction images, a clear exposition but long enough to remember the historical circumstances. Then Ben Affleck abuse parallel arrangements to make us understand so supported the parallel between lee valley Hollywood that does not deprive scratch (rather funny way, it's true) and the staging of the taking lee valley of hostage by his "actors". In both cases, it is a scripted reality as stressed and highlights the assembly in case we would not have understood. From this moment, we are only waiting for one thing: exfiltration at the airport, the climax, climax. The scene is certainly awaited panting and gripping but spares us nothing of the genre clichés (ticket validated at the last minute ...).
When it comes to car chases or instill a sense of urgency, adrenaline, danger, control of the director is obvious, as in "The Town" and is palpable tension. Too bad we do not find the same seal between good and evil, crime and innocence, and this fascinating sociological aspect in "Gone Baby Gone" lee valley and "The Town" that brought them their interest and originality .
If implementation is fully under control, it is also primarily editing and cutting that infuse the film its hectic pace even though Ben Affleck uses, as in his previous films, the camera which encloses and surrounds the faces for us understanding confinement, the noose that tightens the tension.
"Argo" has all of the caricature of the US spy movie: the slogan slamming (the film was wrong the real mission), the melancholy hero who is opposed to hierarchy and plagued by personal demons (the ultimate is achieved with the design lee valley for the little boy, still scene once telephoned without forgetting the dialogue between the producer and the CIA on their children), music (Alexandre Desplat signed) to accentuate the suspense, and of course especially to show us how the people lee valley of the CIA and Hollywood are virile and have no language in their pocket a refined language with "supposedly lee valley irresistible" "Argofuckyourself! "Or this replica among others which Prévert turn in his grave:" The audience will hate. What public? The one with the eyes! ".
Everything was there to make this actual scenario and improbable a real, large and beautiful political lee valley espionage movie, unfortunately his extreme lack of restraint and subtlety make a captivating entertainment (but we can captivate with more or less easy tricks ) above the fray but certainly not very original, and the glory of the Stars and Stripes (wonder she does not float insolently and proudly at the end of the film). This will, however, I discovered this incredible story (by Bill Clinton declassified and made public in 1997), which has interesting resonances with the current political situation (the film was also shot in Turkey). But if, like me, you like movies of espio
